Strategies For Parents To Keep Students Motivated

Quizzes, lectures, or assignments, students have a lot of things to do in their daily life. These things also contribute to both highs and lows in their career; therefore, it is important to motivate students. For example, a student’s performance keeps them motivated and consistent with their goals. However, when they face any failure, all their motivation gets shattered in minutes. It also affects their academic consistency in the long term.

So, what can you, as a parent, do in such cases? A lot of things. Here’s a quick list of strategies for parents to keep students motivated.

Upgrade Your Home Atmosphere

When a student is unmotivated, there are a lot of contributors to the same. This includes your home atmosphere because that’s where your child starts learning. You should be considerate of your home ambiance and ensure a learning atmosphere.

For example, try keeping unnecessary noise at bay when it’s your child’s study time. Similarly, if preschoolers are at home, ask them to keep it down while your other child is studying. Also, don’t disturb them while they’re struggling to concentrate.

Don’t Pressurise

There are times when your child may not perform well due to demotivation. However, you must not pressure them or be harsh to them during this time. That’s because they expect support from your end, and if you don’t offer them, they may become more demotivated.

Similarly, if your child comes to you to share their disappointment with their academic performance, encourage them to maintain consistency and work harder. Don’t start yelling or scolding them.

We also recommend sitting and talking with your child to discuss if they’re distracted by something. Once they start sharing any issues with you, try to stay calm and listen to their problems. Also, assure your child that you’re there for them regardless of the issue.

Extracurricular Activities

As per a study on Mulan students, it was seen that extracurricular activity has a positive influence on students’ life. Not only did it improve their behavior, but also their academic performance, regular class attendance, exam scores, and self-image. Overall, it’s ideal for making a student’s life successful.

That’s why, if your child is interested in any extracurricular activity, encourage them to take part in it. Similarly, if they’re interested in taking classes or courses on that particular activity, don’t back off or hesitate. Rather, support them to take part in the same.

Convert Challenging Topics to Games

If your child is struggling with a topic or concept, you can teach them that through unique and interactive games. There are also creative ways to help your child memorize complex words with mnemonics. This will help them remember things better, especially the theoretical part.

As for games, you can try creating puzzles or maybe quizzes with rewards. Say, if they’re struggling with mathematics, you can create fun numerical puzzles for tough problems.

Similarly, if they’re struggling with the periodic table in chemistry, make a story with all the elements, so they can master the basics of chemistry perfectly. You can also include visuals as it helps to retain necessary information in their mind efficiently.

Create a Study Plan Along With Them

When any student suffers from failure, they often over-burden themselves with a hectic schedule. So, once you see your child making a study plan, encourage them to make a balanced schedule. Explain to them the importance of breaks and priorities so they can study smartly. This is a great way to motivate students.

You can also help them segregate their study time per homework, assignments, and quiz preparation. Encourage your child to give more time to struggling subjects and help them to stay consistent with their objectives.

Keep Their Mental Health In Check

With so many things going on simultaneously, a student is likely to compromise their mental health. Whether it’s performance stress, anxiety, or difficulty concentrating, they can suffer from so many things without you being aware of it. That’s why try keeping their mental health in check, and encourage them to take part in activities that keep them relaxed.

For example, you can ask them to go for a quick walk or do yoga after their study time. These activities promote mindfulness and self-love while reducing stress/anxiety.

Motivate Them to Set Realistic Goals

Many students get demotivated when they set unrealistic goals and fail to meet them. So, ask your child to set short and realistic goals that give a sense of accomplishment after completing them. For example, if your child is studying biology, ask them to keep a target of half a chapter for one day. That’s doable and easy to manage.

If they start setting a target for 4-5 chapters in one day, it may lead to a huge downfall and eventually demotivation. Ask them to use the same formula while revising or practicing questions.

Hire a Tutor

Students often lose their motivation when they lose their interest in a subject. And when does a student lose their interest in a subject? When they don’t understand the concepts clearly. The best way to combat this problem is by hiring a tutor.

Tutors can motivate students to learn and clear out their concepts. They can also implement efficient strategies, so your child can understand things more clearly. Besides academic support, tutors can also offer them morale strength and keep them committed to their motives.

If your child is struggling with maths, look for the signs that indicate that they need the help of a math tutor. Depending on their academic struggles, hire a tutor with the best expertise.

Consider Efforts More than Outcomes

There could be times when your child may give their hundred percent, yet they may not get the outcomes as per their efforts. In such cases, you, as a parent, should appreciate their efforts rather than nagging about outcomes.

In fact, you can reward them for their hard work, so they can make a comeback with even more enthusiasm. Instead of keeping a face of disappointment, be proud and root for them.

That’s all. These were some of the best strategies for parents to motivate students. With your support and hard work, your child can definitely perform better in their academic life.
